Central Alberta Drug Treatment Court Services
Position: Program Assistant – PT Term Position (24 hrs/week for 6 months)
 
The Agency
 
The John Howard Society of Red Deer is a non-profit organization working to promote community harmony through the advocation of human dignity and social justice. We support and serve those involved in the justice system through a restorative process and believe in treating every person with fairness, dignity and compassion while holding each person accountable for their own behavior.
 
The Project
Central Alberta Drug Treatment Court Services offers community-based treatment support services to the participants of the Central Alberta Drug Treatment Court -Provincial Court of Alberta – program. Working together within a multi-disciplinary team, the Drug Treatment Court program involves a process of intensive judicial supervision, treatment, rehabilitation, and community reintegration for individuals who have become involved in the criminal justice system as a result of their substance use disorder.  The program works in partnership with multiple government ministries, community agencies, and organizations to provide links to resources for participants. 
 
The Position
 
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Program Assistant will provide overall administrative and practical support to the program staff and participants. This will include reception, data entry, filing, inventory management, weekly shopping errands, drug screening, and daily client interaction.  This position requires someone who is an outside of the box thinker, self-directed but also a team player, and comfortable working with challenging situations and people.
 
As an ideal candidate you will have:
 
Mandatory Requirements
 
  • Minimum two years of experience in the last 5 years working with vulnerable populations.
  • A valid driver’s license, registration, insurance, and a reliable vehicle.
  • Strong ethics, accountability, and adherence to standards of practice.
  • Well versed in Office 365, and skilled in Word and Excel. 
  • Strong understanding of technology.
  • Willingness to train as a drug screener to provide program support.
  • Comfortable, with a sound understanding of working with people with addiction and criminal pasts (nonviolent).
  • Clean criminal record check
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
 
 
 
Desirable qualifications
 
  • Experience with drug screening practices and specimen collection
  • Self-motivated
  • Have a strong interest or experience in working with addictions and/or the criminal justice system.
  • ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
  • First Aid with CPR

Casual Support Worker – Weekends, Overnights and Holidays

The Program: 
Horizon House is a community residential facility (CRF) that provides housing, support and supervision to federal offenders (male and female) upon their conditional release to the community. We work to successfully reintegrate offenders into the community, and to assess and mitigate risk during the process of reintegration.
The Position: 
The casual support worker is responsible for completing day to day clerical tasks, and for monitoring and documenting residents' movement in the house as well as for the verification/tracking of residents' daily activities in the community. The successful candidate will be a team player who displays strong professional boundaries. They will feel comfortable interacting with offenders convicted of a wide range of offenses, and will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. A basic understanding of community corrections and familiarity with addictions and/or mental health disorders would be a great asset.
Hours and Compensation:
Applicants must be willing and able to work shift work (8 to 10 hour shifts). Only applicants who have a flexible schedule and are available for weekends and overnight shifts will be considered.  Applicants should clearly indicate their availability upon applying. Compensation for this position starts at a minimum hourly rate of $18.00/hr but may be negotiable based on experience and suitability. Training wage will be discussed with the successful candidate prior to their start date.
 
Requirements:
·         The ability to obtain a clean advanced criminal record check
·         Standard First Aid/CPR
·         A post-secondary certificate/diploma (or equivalent) in a relevant human services field
